How it conquered its territories

The Russian Empire extended itself, according to a logic of inevitable expansion, over the plains, where stopping meant death. The Russian Empire cannot at all be compared to the European colonialist empires. The Russian state largely grew because the Russians proved a lively, hard-working and enterprising people. The natural environment was both harsh and generous to them. Russia had always been surrounded by sparsely populated and barely developed lands. These lands, at first glance, were cold and infertile, remote from the centers of civilization.
